I'm having this SAME issue. I have no clue what to do, but every time I try installing a plugin it just says "waiting for http://www.drowningamerican.com..." (my site) in the bottom left corner of the browser.
CJ, I'm not sure I understand renaming the wp-content/upgrade folder. Just try renaming it in general?
