I'm sorry but you must have made a mistake somewhere. I have lost count of the number of child themes I have created and they have always worked. Unfortunately "it didn't work" doesn't give us a lot to go on. Perhaps you need post in the theme's dedicated forum: http://wordpress.org/support/theme/dinky
